The Drum & Bass Thread (formally Drum 'n' Bass is dead?)
The Drum & Bass Thread (formally Drum 'n' Bass is dead?) Posted on: 19.08.2008 by Random X Every now and than, a musical genres foremost poet or pioneer will come forth claiming the style is dead. We've already seen it in punk, hip hop, metal, rock and opera already. Stupidest thing even, that this seems to be some kind of "retro- cycle" that passes along every decade. With the coming of styles like dubstep amongst others, purists are really keen on claiming that these styles are no derative or subgenre of our beloved DnB. Better yet, they utter the words "DnB is dead!" If your own creative impulses can't cope with a style any longer, why claim it is dead in the first place? Couldn't it just evolve into other (sub)styles? No, kill your idols instead! There seems to be no better way to start something new, than completely destroy any relations with the past. How can a genre with high BPM rates be dead, while comparing it to the ever so low BPM rates of the ever so vivid dubstep? Ofcourse, BPM rates are not a factor in this case, but people listening and enjoying DnB are. There are still heaps and heaps of bass-heads still jumping their shoes to the sounds of d&b pioneers as Krush, Bukem, Dom & Roland and all others still producing. Agreed that the old spirit needs to be revived. Still, it's no reason to don the old lass after that much joy she has given us. Drum and Bass is dead? It seems ever so vibrant as it was in 1996! | |

I believe it's as strong as ever, but has evolved away from the traditional dance music scene and towards a more popular format. It's not pop music, but it sits somewhere in between. It's not the best material for a DJ because the songs really stand unto themselves unlike techno where the DJ can add so much through the mix. One of the problems going back 10 years is that many of producers were never good DJs and only played their own records. At the same time it never seemed like there were a lot of DnB DJs that weren't producers first. It's not necessarily a bad thing though. DnB has evolved to the point where the songs are very complex and musical, whereas a lot of techno and trance still feel a little a simple. This is just my take and there are exceptions. Also consider I am a Californian and haven't seen how the scene has evolved first hand in the places where it's more popular. |

Ryan Morales 19.02.2009 | NOW, back to Drum an a Bass. Wooo! |
Ryan Morales 19.02.2009 | ^ Yep, thats pretty much how it is. The 'rational' western world is completely irrational and retarded when it comes to drug policy, its painted as 'evil' and so many people believe it so without actually knowing anything about it. As usual. Yet they are happy to smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol til it kills them.... and its socially accepted. Weed, probably one of the the safest drugs on the planet is legal (I mean asprin is many many time more lethal), yet we sell a deadly poison on every street corner ? I could rage about this for years but it would do no good. If people dont want to listen they dont want to listen. I hate closed minded fucks, too bad most of the decision making public (and politicians) are exactly that. |
Virginia Ortiz 19.02.2009 | interesting article from a New Scientist Subject: [normlnz] New Scientist doubts drug policy will be driven by evidence Posted by Roger Brooking on the Aandd list This is the editorial in the latest edition of the New Scientist. It compares the harm caused by MDMA with peanuts....and would appear to suggest that nothing helpful is likely to come from attempts to persuade governments to introduce evidence based policy on harm reduction. Roger Editorial: Drugs drive politicians out of their minds. New Scientist, 11 February 2009 IMAGINE you are seated at a table with two bowls in front of you. One contains peanuts, the other tablets of the illegal recreational drug MDMA (ecstasy). A stranger joins you, and you have to decide whether to give them a peanut or a pill. Which is safest? Say you have to decide whether to give a stranger a peanut or ecstasy. Which is safest? Ecstasy, of course. You should give them ecstasy, of course. A much larger percentage of people suffer a fatal acute reaction to peanuts than to MDMA. This, of course, is only a thought experiment; nobody would consider doing it for real. But it puts the risks associated with ecstasy in context with others we take for granted. Yes, ecstasy is dangerous and people who take it are putting their lives on the line. But the danger needs to be put in perspective. Sadly, perspective is something that is generally lacking in the long and tortuous debate over illegal drugs. In this magazine, we have argued that drug policy should be made on the basis of evidence of harmfulness - to individuals and to society. The British government's stated line is similar, yet time and again it ignores its own rules and the recommendations of its experts. Most other western governments act in a similar way. The latest example of doublebelieve concerns MDMA. As New Scientist went to press, the UK government's Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs was widely expected to recommend downgrading it, based on evidence of its limited harmfulness (see "Ecstasy's legacy: so far, so good") <https://exchange.canterbury.ac.nz/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20126954.500-ecstasys-longterm-effects-revealed.html> . Yet the government has already rejected the advice. No doubt this is partly a reaction to the furore over the government's de facto decriminalisation of cannabis in 2004, based on another advisory council recommendation. Despite the fact that the move actually reduced the quantity of cannabis being smoked - surely a welcome outcome of any rational drug policy - the government recently reversed it in the face of implacably bad press. For evidence of how irrational and lacking in perspective the public debate has become, consider how the advisory council's chairman, David Nutt, found himself in hot water last weekend for comparing the harm caused by ecstasy to the harm caused by horse riding, or "equasy" as he dubbed it. Nutt's intention was simply to put ecstasy in context with other sources of harm. But his comments - which he actually made last month in an editorial in the Journal of Psychopharmacology - caused predictable squeals of outrage and calls for his head. This is a worldwide problem. We need a rational debate about the true damage caused by illegal drugs - which pales into insignificance compared with the havoc wreaked by legal drugs such as alcohol and tobacco. Until then, we have no chance of developing a rational drug policy |
